I have had these lights for 3 years now. They are used durring XMas only. Even w/ a few hrs of sun they last about 3 or 4 hrs.
They go on the railing of our stairs. I think if you live in a house w/ yard, you might be under-whelmed w/ these because they are not as bright as plug-in lights.

My main complaint with this item is not the lights themselves, although they are rather dim[...]
As for the lights themselves, I charged up the battery (regular rechargeable AA battery, thank goodness) before placing the solar cell in our south facing window. The lights all worked, but as noted, were dim. I would not recommend these lights for trees with heavy needles or lots of other lights. As it is, our tree is a small white pine with wispy needles and only one other string of LED lights. So they make for a nice and understated color contrast to the cool white lights. And considering that only 1 AA battery powers the string, the dimness is understandable.
I don't know that I would use these for outdoor lighting, however I will use them again on my indoor tree where they show up against a firelit room.
