For the first time use, please remove the top of the light from the base and you should see an on/off switch. Once turned on the battery will receive the charge from the solar panel. When it is dark out they will automatically turn on, and turn off once there is day light. If the AA batteries run out, please replace them with new ones.

Less expensive than Walmart, well packed, and quick delivery. I appreciate that kind of service.
As to the lights, the quality is good and they put out as much light at you would expect from one led, however the 'lens' and the reflector in the base of the lens magnifies it enough to cover a descent area dimly. Not as bright as a nightlight you use indoors but bright enough to keep you from tripping over something.
